Melissa Liew, MD

Melissa is Vice President and U.S. Medical Head of Ophthalmology at Novartis Pharmaceuticals, responsible for leading development and implementing Novartis’ Medical Affairs strategy across the full ophthalmology portfolio. Prior to this role, Melissa was VP and Therapeutic Area Head at Novartis, supporting the delivery of global development programs and retina portfolio, playing a key role in the approvals for Lucentis. Originally from the UK, Melissa received her medical degree with distinction from University College, London. She is a board certified Ophthalmologist having completed her Ophthalmology residency/training at Moorfields Hospital and subsequently a glaucoma fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia. Her work as a Wellcome Trust researcher, focused on genetic epidemiology of retinal diseases and macular pigment, earned her a European Society of Ophthalmology award.
