Biography
Dr. David Friess joined STAAR Surgical in 2016 and is Vice President, North America Clinical Strategy and Professional Affairs, serving on STAAR’s Executive Management Team and leading a clinical support team for surgeon and clinician training and medical education. He has over 15 years of experience in the global ophthalmic field across patient care, clinical research and regulatory strategy, medical affairs and education. Dr. Friess graduated with clinical honors from the Salus University Pennsylvania College of Optometry and is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. He completed a residency in cornea and ocular surgical care at DurrieVision/Hunkeler Eye Institute in Kansas City. He served as Philadelphia clinical director at LCA Vision, Inc. before clinical/regulatory work at Alcon, Inc., TrueVision 3D Surgical and i-Optics. Dr. Friess was a sub-investigator on 8 FDA Phase III clinical trials, advised multiple 510k and PMA approvals, and has authored research in the Journal of Refractive Surgery, the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, and two medical textbook chapters. He is the immediate past president of the Optometric Cornea, Cataract & Refractive Society (OCCRS) and current president of the Salus University Alumni Association. He resides near Philadelphia with his family.
