Robert Avery, MD

Robert Avery, founder and CEO of California Retina Consultants, received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and took his ophthalmology training there at Wilmer. He completed a vitreoretinal fellowship at Duke before returning to Wilmer. He has received numerous honors, including Senior honor awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists, where he serves on the board of directors. He was the first recipient of the Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Award. For over 25 years, Dr. Avery has been a principal investigator for numerous national clinical trials at California Retinal Consultants and Research Foundation, including recent trials of stem cell and gene therapy. He continues research on the pharmacokinetics, safety, and delivery of anti-VEGF agents. He holds patents in retinal drug delivery and has been involved in several ocular drug delivery start-up companies. He is a member of Visionary Ventures and InFocus.
