Biography

Steve Schallhorn is the Chief Medical Director for Zeiss and a board certified ophthalmologist in private practice in San Diego, CA as well as a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco. After graduating from Colorado State University, Dr. Schallhorn entered the US Navy in 1977 and was a fighter pilot in an F-14 squadron and instructor at the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN). He then completed a medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, ophthalmology residency at the Naval Medical Center San Diego in 1993, and cornea fellowship at the Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California. He founded of the Department of Defense refractive surgery program and led many studies on the safety and effectiveness of eye surgery with a special emphasis on evaluating the quality of vision and physiologic impact of environmental extremes. Dr. Schallhorn was the Chief Medical Director for Optical Express from 1977 until 2016 and became the Chief Medical Director for Zeiss in October 2016.
